Mary Holland contacted me recently that she was promoting her book ”The Bone Road” online, and asked for a redesign of the cover for digital copies. It’s not often I get the chance to revist a cover I’ve done, so I jumped at the chance.
Ebook covers need to be designed a bit differently since they’re seen mostly as thumbnails. All books should have a powerful thumbnail, but in print you can rely on a level of detail to catch the eye that you can’t rely on in digital formats.
Here’s the set of initial images I sent her for the redesign. For me illustrating is the longest part of my process, being able to play with the text and colors was a fun exercise.
This illustration was the grand prize winner in Heather McDougal’s Steam Beast contest. I don’t normally submit to contests, but McDougal’s concept of the Steam Beast and and the lore surrounding it were so captivating I just had to draw it. You can read more about her work and see the other contest winners here!

I had the pleasure of illustrating the cover for Broad Universe‘s anthology sampler, Broad Spectrum, which you can find here. Lots of great work in this book and Broad Universe is a wonderful organization.
I illustrated the dung beetle and gigantic poop ball for Caustic’s new album “The Man Who Couldn’t Stop”. This was a great project with a great client. The layout and text was done by artist Josh Lenius. You can order the album straight from Metropolic Records here (recommended), or from Amazon here.
